Have you ever met a person who said – point blank, "Well I plan to quit being a Christian starting tomorrow.  I’ve thought about it and I’m walking away from God?"

How much "life junk" can you carry? Why not leave your junk behind?Although it happens that way occasionally, most people never plan to stop being a Christian.  Like the old soldier, they just fade away.  An accumulation of "life junk" gradually drags them down in their walk with God.

Hurts not forgiven, slights, TV shows that are more exciting than preaching, a schedule that becomes increasingly relentless.  Such is the stuff that allows a person to drift away.  Such is the darkness that makes the light fade.

I met a man yesterday, after I preached.  I know little of his story.  During the invitation song, he strode forward decisively.  As we talked, he spoke of being away from God for thirty years.

"I’ve asked God for forgiveness and I want to be a part of God’s family again."

The statement was equivalent to leaving thirty years of "life junk" at the garbage dump.

Give up on the lost people I love?  Not just yet – maybe God will reach them in thirty years.

Have you given up on yourself?  Feel like you’ve drifted too far?

Come home – we’re family.  Just leave your "junk" at the door!

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

Psalm 46:1

-- Selected, October 2000 --
