If I were to send out a survey and ask people if they believed that the Bible was inspired, most would probably say, “yes.” However, I fear that most people do not really know what Biblical inspiration is.  Last week we showed that the Bible was given by God.  But how?

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God…” (2 Timothy 3:16). Literally translated, this passage reads, “All Scripture is God breathed…”  When we talk about Biblical inspiration, we are not talking about the kind of inspiration that one has when he is inspired to write a poem or song. We are saying that the Bible came from God.

Written by Men, Inspired by God

We know that the Scriptures were written by men. These men were inspired by God to write the things that have been passed down to us.We know that the Scriptures were written by men. These men were inspired by God to write the things that have been passed down to us. “For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:21). Biblical writers were not writing simply writing the will of man, rather they were moved or borne along by the Holy Spirit. They did not always understand the things which they were writing; “Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.” (1 Peter 1:10-11).

His Words, Their Hands

Some believe that God supplied the thoughts and allowed the writers to express them in their own words. The problem with this view is that it would allow human error into the Bible. Ask any teacher how well his or her students can express thoughts that the teacher has given. The student may get most of it right but seldom is perfect. God did more than just supply the thoughts. He gave the very words using the various men’s own vocabularies and writing styles. “The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue.” (2 Samuel 23:2).
